  • In the wake of scandals that cost Kelly Greenberg and Beth Couture their jobs, Kate Fagan writes that the difference between a demanding coach and an abusive coach is not a thin line.

    sounds hauntingly familiar -

    • Illini associate head coach looks a lot like John McEnroe. Perhaps he has the same temperament to boot.

      • Except both Greenberg and Couture were on a downslide of the previously successful programs they had built.

        • Boston University has parted ways with women’s basketball coach Kelly Greenberg after four scholarship players said they quit the team last year because Greenberg emotionally abused them.

          • So does anyone see the apparent differences in the two cases?

My spidey senses point to the won loss records last year of the coaches involved and the fact more ex players put their butts on the line than they did here.

                None of which is okay.

I'm sure there are other differences as well but these are what I see on the surface.

Parents of former Wichita State women’s basketball players lobby for NCAA involvement

                  • That is changing my opinion from upset parents to someone with an agenda.

If it were only one or two parents, I would agree. But with so many involved, I don't think so.

Personally, if my kid were already gone and moved on, I wouldn't have the energy to follow an agenda like that. I wouldn't have anything personally to gain. But again, that's just how I would look at it.

I agree. Sounds like they got "blown off" and it pissed them off. Whole situation has been ugly for a couple of years now and I'm surprised WSU didn't cut the cord. Will be a huge magnifying glass hovering over the program until JA is gone.

There clearly is an agenda. The question I have is the agenda justified? Until there is much more transparency on the "facts" of the situation I am not sure any of us can really make that judgment. BTW I don't really expect to see such transparency.

I wonder how the NCAA views their role in this kind of a situation? My guess is they will say that it is up to the institution to determine what kind of environment and experience is acceptable for their student athletes. How a coach chooses to "train", " discipline" and "treat" his/her players is not up to the NCAA as long as it is done within the parameters of their rules.

However, it is odd that none of our other athletic programs seem to even have a hint of this kind of discontent at least certainly not to this degree. So from that standpoint the WBB program is somewhat of an outlier at Wichita State.

Transparency on the "facts" of the situation do need to come out. I think both sides would be satisfied if all of it was "out in the open" then the program would be able to move on. It seems the parents would have to have some legitimate concerns to be so determined to get NCAA involved. Doesn't look good when HCJA has attorneys and Administration has attorneys and players are being interviewed......that doesn't exactly look very good. Be curious to know if that didn't set right with the parents.
